1998, September 28th
West Hollywood, California, USA - The Palladium

At the second of two sold-out shows at The Hollywood Palladium, Garbage vocalist Shirley Manson proved she is one of the few true rock stars in music today.

Looking completely at ease on a stage, Manson and her bandmates, including drummer Butch Vig and guitarists Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, mesmerized their September 28 audience with hard-driving rock. Manson's voice is the right combination of sexy, dreamy, scary and psychotic layered over memorable melodies to express dark lyrics.

Returning to Los Angeles four months after their May 21 performance at The Palace, the band proved they have gotten stronger as they continued to demonstrate their connection with their audience. Comprising their set of songs from their two albums (their self-titled release and "Version 2.0"), they demonstrated strong performances of their hits, including such songs as "Queer," "Only Happy When It Rains," "Push It" and "I Think I'm Paranoid," as well as their own version of Big Star's "Thirteen."

Garbage began in 1993 as a studio project for Vig, Marker and Erikson. The following year, the three saw Manson in the "Suffocate Me" video from her then-band Angelfish on MTV's "120 Minutes" and tracked her down. Manson flew from her home in Scotland to Madison, Wisconsin for some introductory recording and the rest is history.

Manson is one performer who is not afraid to directly interact with her fans and look them right in the eye. Even though the band had been up since 5:30 in the morning to make a special appearance on the KROQ FM Kevin & Bean show for what they called "Breakfast with Garbage," it took no toll on their performance.

Garbage brought the power of their technically complex recordings to life with what seemed like total simplicity. The band seemed more relaxed this time around, turning in a brilliant performance that proved they never had to worry about the often-feared sophomore slump. Garbage continues to demonstrate that it is possible to break new musical ground and still keep your fans happy.
