Thanks to everyone who entered this competition! With more than 200 submissions, it was very hard for me to select who would get the CDs. I received some of my favourite pics more than once, so if any duplicate submission won the CD, it went to the first person submitting it.
The 4 winning pics are below, and who won the CDs were: Chase Sanders, Phil, Amanda Mongeon and Veronica Read. Thanks everyone!
In the
galleries from the debut album and Version 2.0 you can find 125 new pics (you can find some difficulties opening some images. This will be fixed soon)! Enjoy them!!

GARBAGE TIDBITS AND RUMOURS
posted 02:55 GMT+0

* The next Garbage singles have the following release dates: Sex Is Not The Enemy (UK) should be released on June 13th, while Europe's single, "Run Baby Run" should be released on June 20th, with a video around the beggining of the same month.

* Some of the
b-sides that weren't released from Bleed Like Me's album recordings have the following working titles: Honey Bee, Hanging with the Bitches, Never Be (Free?) and Guilty. No official word has been said about this b-sides or to which will be released on this singles.

* On a Washington Post Interview, Butch said he hopes to put together a box set of B-sides and rarities, hopefully including "Go Pack Go," a crunchy stadium-style update of the Green Bay Packers chant by the 6 Packers (recorded on tour by the Madison crew, No Doubt and the Distillers).
He also said "I've been bugging the band for a few years to make what I call 'the bummer record,' all really slow, Leonard Cohen-style songs, just super depressing yet intimate, because I love Shirley's voice on those kinds of things. I think we could make an amazing record that would probably be commercial suicide!"

* Recent *rumours* state that "Sex Is Not The Enemy" may be the soundtrack for a comercial advert in the UK. No official word or confirmation has been said about this: either if there will indeed be a comercial nor for what brand. Recent *fan speculations* point this possible advert to Coke.

GARBAGE: GUITARS!
posted 02:55 GMT+0

By Steph Jorgl | May 2005
This is a really huge guitar record for us,” says Butch Vig, producer, drummer and songwriter for Garbage. Vig put his name on the map when he produced Nirvana’s ground-breaking Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream.
The new Garbage record — released in April 2005 — is called Bleed Like Me.
This release varies from the band’s past as an electronica-heavy act, but better represents what they’ve always sounded like live.
SIGNAL PATH
“This time around, we made a conscious decision to get in the room and turn the amps on so we could get some feedback, so that it resonates,” says Vig. “When the sound comes into the pickups, it just rings differently than if you’re sitting in a chair in the studio. We would run some of our guitar tracks into the Line 6 XT Pro Pod, and some into Matchless, Mesa Boogie, Marshall or Fender amps. We also used a German amp called the Diezel—they are great for the crunchy stuff.”
“We used the Littlelabs PCP Distro to split the guitar signals to the different heads and Pod,” explains engineer Billy Bush. “All of the amps were routed to the same old Marshall 4x12 slant that we have at the studio.”
“But if there was a secret weapon on the guitars, it was the Palmer Speaker Simulator that we used,” says Vig. “It’s designed so you can record in your house without an amp, but it sounds better than even a DI. It’s got some tonal controls and it sounds very much like the amp is right in your face.” They also used some Chandler TG-2 and Channel pre amps, and the Groove Tubes ViPRE, Focusrite 430, and Manley SLAM as preamps for guitar tracking.
MIC POSITION
The guitar tracks for Bleed Like Me were recorded using an assortment of mics — positioned carefully to satisfy Vig’s ears. “We tried to use good microphones: a Neumann FET47, the RODE NT2, and a Shure FM57,” he says. “We also used the Royer 121 ribbon mics and Coles ribbon microphones. We moved them back from the amp maybe six inches or so, and would line them up so we could get them all in phase.” They also used a Brauner KHE-VM1 as a room-ambience mic.
“I like to turn it up, put some headphones on, but then not have anyone play the guitar or any other signal coming through,” he says. “Then I’ll just listen to the different tones of the background hiss and move it around, so I can kind of balance the low with the high, bright, clear sound. And once we get those set up on a session, we’ll make sure they’re in phase so we can mix or match—or pick one—and that can take a while.”
They usually end up with four mics, plus the Pod and the Palmer. “Then we split between those and figure out what is best for the recording,” he adds.
PROCESSING
“Now, as we work on a song, it kind of starts getting mixed as the song gets farther along,” says Vig. This process is enabled by the twin Pro Tools HD rigs that Vig has set up at Smart Studios and at his home studio.
“I’ll start putting in automation, EQing and balancing and panning things,” explains Vig. “I like the Massenberg EQ because it’s got a great high and low pass filter. When you’re recording a lot of big guitar tracks, sometimes you want to put in a high pass at 60 Hz or 80 Hz. That way, you still get the fundamental body, but it doesn’t have all the sub stuff making the song sound muddy.”
TRACK NOTES
Some songs on Bleed Like Me have 60 or 70 tracks — but not all playing at the same time. “It might just be an extra texture on the chorus,” he says. “But most of them boil down to a riff or a chord progression that Duke and Steve would play. Then we would layer the electronic things underneath the guitars. But the electronic elements are still way secondary to the core of the record.”
“We wanted to turn the amps on,” says Vig, “and crank it up, versus just plugging in and doing the same four bars over and over a hundred times.”

BUTCH VIGS ANSWERS HIS EITHER/OR CHOICES
posted 01:15 GMT+0

Butch Vig was the premier producer of the alternative rock boom of the early 1990s, helming records for bands including Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, before finding success as a performer with the group Garbage. Born in the small dairy farm community of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Vig studied piano as a child, picking up the drums during his teen years; after two years as a pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin, he dropped out to pursue a career in music.
Recently he took time out of his busy schedule to play “EITHER/OR” with ARTISTdirect.
AD:
Beer or Wine?
BV: Wine! I'm in love with Dan Duckhorn's wines lately: the Paraduxx, a red Zin blend, and the Duckhorn Sauvingnon Blanc! I always crack a bottle or two at a party, and my friend Mike X says that I'm becoming the Duckhorn distributor of Silverlake!
AD:
On the Rocks or Straight-Up?
BV: Vodka on the rocks, sometimes with a splash of seltzer.
AD:
Pizza or Sushi?
BV: Sushi...pizza makes me schluffy.
AD:
Corn or Flour?
BV: Corn.
AD:
The Onion or The Simpsons?
BV: Hard to choose, they both make me laugh. I'd have to say the Onion because we always have it lying around the studio.
AD:
Stars Wars or Lord of the Rings?
BV: I'd have to say Lord of the Rings, but I'd rather vote for Harry Potter.
AD:
Ashley or Jessica?
BV: I'll go with Ashley....she's a bit more of a beautiful mess.
AD:
Favre or Marino?
BV: Are you kidding me? You're talking to one of the band members of The 6 Packers, who wrote the Lambeau anthem, Go Pack Go! Farve is so fun to watch....and Marino never did win a Super Bowl.
AD:
Lakers or Packers?
BV: Oh man, now your really getting into it with me. As far as I'm concerned, the Packers are THE GREATEST TEAM IN THE HISTORY OF PROFESSIONAL SPORTS. Plus, being from Wisconsin and now living in LA, I take some pleasure in being a Laker Hater.
AD:
Packers or Badgers?
BV: I'm a UW Badger alumni, so I watch some of the games. But at the end of the day, it's all about the Pack.
AD:
Madison or Milwaukee?
BV: Madtown.
AD:
L.A. or N.Y.?
BV: Silverlake, Los Angeles!
AD:
Hot or Cold?
BV: I like it exactly 78 degrees...is that hot?
AD:
Sunrise or Sunset?
BV: Sunset, I never see sunrise, unless I've been a bad boy.
AD:
U2 or R.E.M.?
BV: Tough choice...I gotta go with U2 because they are still making great music, and in my eyes currently hold the heavyweight title: "The Biggest Band In The World". Plus, we've toured with them, they are super cool, and we got to fly on the band's personal jet! But I can't dis REM. Both bands set a standard for many aspiring musicians on how to carve out your own path in the music biz and retain your dignity.
AD:
The Replacements or Husker Du?
BV: I'm a huge fan of the Replacements. Paul Westerberg is a brilliant songwriter.
AD:
Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana?
BV: I can't choose between them, it's like picking a favorite child. This one is a tie!
AD:
Zwan or Foo Fighters?
BV: Man, you're really trying to get me into trouble aren't you. I'll go with the Foo's, cuz I gotta give Dave some props for playing on “Bad Boyfriend,” and we're going to be playing with them in Russia next month. But I heard Billy's new solo album and I really like it...lots of synths and electronics.
AD:
Summerfest or Coachella?
BV: Summerfest. There are so many bands you can see over the course of a week, and the ticket prices are really a bargain. But if you want to see the hot bands of the moment, I'd go to Coachella. Now if they could only figure out how to get in and out of the festival site a bit easier.
AD:
Producing or Performing?
BV: Producing, cuz I love being in the studio. But I still like performing because you get that endorphin rush from making a glorious noise and indulging yourself in front of an audience!
