GARBAGE FRONTWOMAN FREAKS OUT MALE FANS
posted 00:10 GMT+0

TORONTO - Garbage's formidable frontwoman Shirley Manson sits on a chair in a Toronto hotel room yesterday wearing a tiny red T-shirt that says, "Redheads have more fun."
The striking 38-year-old Edinburgh native with intense green eyes who packs a sexy wallop on stage claims her groupies are never of the male variety.
"I get female groupies, but I don't get male groupies," says Manson in her thick Scottish accent that makes her all the more attractive. "I have women who offer to sleep with me all the time. But not men. They're all talk and nay action -- as we'd say in Scotland. If I go anywhere near most of our male following, they are freaked. Absolutely freaked. I think my height has got a lot to do with it. I'm really tall. I'm five-eight, and with heels, I'm six foot, so people are like. 'Whoa, Amazon!' People are a wee taken aback by that 'cause I think people expect me to be small."
Manson, who projects ferocious confidence as a performer, has been assigned the same prestigious league that includes Debbie Harry, Chrissie Hynde, and Patti Smith.
In fact, she says those three are among her idols and she's met them all and not been disappointed. "I don't really see where I fit into that group, but I'm very flattered," says Manson, dressed in black shorts with a red tartan belt, black stockings and black boots. "I think, though, all of us women, regardless of how different we are as artists, come from a similar place in terms of how we view our role as a female musician. All of us are pretty feisty. And I think that that's what people identify with. Because there seem to be so few women right now who are interested in having an opinion. Having something to say. Trying to do things a little differently. Refusing to take our clothes off to further our careers."
As mighty as she comes across, Manson had a major scare a few years ago when she lost her voice while Garbage was headlining summer festivals in Europe. She eventually had surgery in June 2003 to remove a cyst from her right vocal chord.
"It's not common, but yeah, I was scared. When you're really up against the possibility of losing your livelihood, you just have to think positively. For once in my life, I thought very positively. And I thought, 'I can do this.' "
Manson maintains that her strength, off-stage and on, hasn't always been there.
"No, no, definitely not. But that said, I'm suddenly looking back at my career. You know, I've been doing this for 23 years. Since I was 15 I've been playing shows and I'm not at all frightened of it. And too, just because the band has really been through great highs, great lows together, I don't think we feel that we've got anything to hide."
Garbage have triumphantly returned with their well-received, hard-rocking and loud fourth album, Bleed Like Me, which debuted at No. 4 in the U.S. and No. 9 in Canada. But beforehand, they had almost called it quits.
In fact, Manson and guitarist Steve Marker, who was at her side, say drummer/producing guru Butch Vig actually did leave the band at one point after nine creatively frustrating months in their Madison, Wis., recording studio.
"The communication had gotten so bad that I don't think any of us know, even to this day, what was going on in each individual's mind," says Manson. "And we've never really spoken about it. But I do know that Butch felt that he quit."
There had been some major physical problems too. Garbage was opening for U2 in 2001 when Vig was diagnosed with the non-life-threatening Type A hepatitis, so the band continued on with replacement drummers. He would also be later diagnosed with Bells Palsy, a facial paralysis that was successfully treated eventually.
"He's Mr. Consistent, he's always the same, neither up nor down; he's a real sweetheart," says Manson. But of Marker and fellow guitarist Duke Erikson, she says, "The three of us are up and down like a bride's nightie. He's very solid. And for him to be the one that really fell by the wayside was unbelievably shocking to all of us. It disturbed our equilibrium. It actually has been a very good thing in some respects. We had to pull the cart. And I think it was a good for Butch to realize the cart could be pulled without him."

10 REASONS WHY WE LOVE GARBAGE - IRISH "FREE!" GAY MAG.
posted 01:20 GMT+0

1. From the leftfield pop anthems 'Queer' through to 'Androgyny', Garbage has always had an eye on the steamy and fluid side of bisexuality. Flirting with the gays is one of our favourite hobbies you know.
2. Shirley Manson, queen bitch frontwoman and allround mouthy bird oozes star quality like most folk ooze grease. She hangs out with Gwen Stefani, knows Madonna, appreciates Kylie's fighting spirit and isn't afraid to diss J-Lo's music. Bring on the catfight!
3. With three producers all playing instruments in the band, the sound was always going to be heavy. Guitar maestro Butch Vig is the legendary producer of classics such as Nirvana's Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream.
4. As everyone knows, the best rock albums are born of conflict. During the recording of the latest album Bleed Like Me, the rows among the band members got so bad that they briefly split up. But they stuck it out for the sake of the music and have recorded their most unashamedly rock album to date.
5. Garbage has contributed two original classics to movie soundtracks. They recorded the seminal James Bond theme tune 'The World Is Not Enough' for Pierce Brosnan's 1999 smash hit movie. Moody, epic and yearning, it's a classic slice of romantic melancholy that sits nicely alongside their doomed ode to unrequited lust, '#1 Crush', from 1997's hyper-soap-opera Romeo + Juliet.
6. In the now defunct Select magazine, Shirley boasted about being a bit of a swinger. "Sure, I've been with girls...." she shrugged, while a nation of impressionable teens swooned. We're all for lezzie loving, and this was before Brookside became a national obsession!
7. The trademark Garbage sound is a unique hybrid of heavy grunge, industrial feedback and gorgeous harmonies sung in Shirley's rather sexy sugared growl. Their biggest strength are their choruses, which are catchier than crabs.
8. Shirley's early band Goodbye Mr Mackenzie consisted of soem not very good Scottish rockers blagging their way round the C List indie circuit. The guys - Butch Vig, Steve Marker & Duke Erikson - saw Shirley on MTV and recognised her potential. They invited her for a rehearsal - "I was nervous and not very good, but the guys believed in me" Shirley says, and the chemistry worked. Garbage was instantly huge.
9. The song 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)' is about troubled superstar writer JT LeRoy. His collection of short stories 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things' chronicles his early life as an underage transvestite hooker. When Shirley read it, she was so moved she wrote the song in celebration of his damaged but courageous life.
10. Garbage's excellent new album Bleed Like Me is stuffed full of potential hits, huge guitars and their trademark angst, including the new single 'Why Do You Love Me'.

FANS COMMENT: GARBAGE PUNKS FANS AT THE 9:30 CLUB
posted 00:05 GMT+0

Garbage had the last laugh as they exited stage right prior to their April 21st encore at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC.
The band had breezed through a particularly stellar set and treated fans to an encore of Metal Heart and Cherry Lips when,
at the end of Sex Is Not the Enemy, Shirley Manson decided to treat the fans to a little peepshow as she coyly tore down the front of her dress to reveal a flesh-colored bra.
Within seconds, "police officers" were onstage hauling a horrified-looking Shirley offstage, announcing "the show is over", as Steve and Duke followed in disbelief and Butch disgustedly threw down his drumsticks and tore backstage. The crowd was in an absolute state of shock; comments were overheard such as "this is BULLSHIT"; "I am never coming to this club again"; "we will hunt those cops down and give them what they deserve"; "let's RIOT this club". Riots almost did ensue, in fact, until the initial shock wore off for some and speculation began that it could have been a simple stunt, a clever new way to end the set, a political statement of sorts relating to the song which was certainly appropriate, particularly being in the nation's capital.
It wasn't entirely confirmed until hours later, outside of the venue, when I learned from the roadies who played the parts of the "DC police officers"- after being grilled about the incident, asked whether or not I thought it was real- that it was indeed
staged for the upcoming Sex Is Not the Enemy music video, which Garbage had filmed much of the previous night in NYC. The "flashing incident" and the subsequent "arrest" was pulled off flawlessly and will indeed make the cut, as well as the fans' raging reactions to the scene. However, the show's finale has caused quite a stir in the Garbage community, as fans are still stunned and some are disappointed that we were left hanging; but the overall consensus is- GOOD ONE, Garbage.

Knitting, mortgages and respect for J-Lo – has self-proclaimed rock’n’roll high priestess Shirley Manson lost her cutting edge? Neil Lewis gets intimate….
“Everybody thinks I’m going to be a cunt”, says Shirley Manson and then laughs mischievously, reclining among a clutter of sofa cushions in her salubrious suite at Kensington’s Royal Garden Hotel. “But I’m not, I’m sweet and nice. Always. Ha ha!”
If the Garbage singer seems determined to shatter her notorious public image – previously part vampish goth diva, part Edinburgh gobshite – then she’s doing an excellent job. This lunchtime, Manson comprises a riot of smiles and throaty cackles, despite her suitcase’s decision to go terminal-hopping between LAX and Heathrow airports. Even her make-up is decidedly low-key, offering a smudge of lipstick and a delicate flick of eyeliner beneath her fiery red hair.
So not the big mouthed hellion of legend then? She smiles. “I have my moments. I can take car of myself, I’m not easily intimidated. But I’m pleasant and I’ve got really good manners. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.”
Right now, the Garbage singer has a good reason to be pleasant. After three years of aborted recordings, mysterious throat cysts, a near death, and the split and reunion of her band, she is with us today, apparently fit, happy and surprisingly mellow. Moreover, out of all this chaos a fourth Garbage album has emerged – the effervescent pop grunge of Bleed Like Me. Yet it seems this is one achievement she’d rather forget: “”Not one minute of it was fun,” she sighs. “Except when I was singing. That was the only time it was fun. I think I was in there for 14 days and that was complete drudgery.”
So how did you keep sane?
I knitted myself a scarf [laughs]. It was beautiful, I’ve had so many compliments. I’ve knitted since I was a wee girl, but I had a traumatic experience when a knitting nancy smashed my mum’s Venetian glassware.
A knitting what?
A knitting nancy. It’s a thread reel with four nails on the top. You use it to thread your material and you make a long tube of knit with it. I’d made a super-long knitting nancy and I’d put it on the mantelpiece. Before I knew it, I’d turned my back and my knitting nancy had fallen and smashed my mum’s glassware. I didn’t knit again until recently.
This is not the kind of conversation I thought we’d be having…
I know! Ha! Knitting saved my life.
So you don’t worry about being cool then?
No, I honestly don’t. It’s boring. I’ve never thought of myself as cool and it’s nothing I’ve ever aspired to. At the end of the day it’s a really unhealthy notion. It’s like fascism. The school of cool is really evil and I don’t think it’s nice. What’s cool anyway? What the fuck does cool mean? Cool gets you fuck all. [Shouting] Cool gets you fuck all!
So I started knitting recently because it felt like my whole life was going down the toilet when I was making this record. I was sitting in the studio for hours and hours, for days and days. I had to feel like I’d achieved something.
So why was recording Bleed Like Me such a painful experience?
“We’ve been together a long time and we had a couple of years where we’d all got to the end of our tether with the band. There were issues that we hadn’t really dealt with. We all retreated into our own little worlds and we stopped talking to each other. It wasn’t much fun… it was just weird.
What were the problems within the band?
I don’t know what it was – it wasn’t one specific thing, it was just years and years of growing up together and not having a discussion about where we wanted to go. It was that simple.
Were you arguing a lot?
Oh no, there’s never arguing in Garbage. It’s all super-passive-aggressive. I hate that, I’d rather fight somebody [laughs]. Even if I got my fucking head kicked in I’d prefer a fight.
Did you ever consider a Metallica-style shrink to keep the lid on things?
Yes! Our management work with Metallica too, so they kept saying, ‘If things are that bad, maybe we should get an expert in?’ We were loath to get involved in that though. And so we eventually got it out of ourselves. But there were moments when we thought ‘Fuck it, we’re going to have to get someone in here’. But we came through and the atmosphere’s fine now.
And Butch Vig (drummer, producer) nearly died a couple of years ago…
Yeah, he was really, dangerously ill with hepatitis. And because nobody was talking, nobody knew how bad it was. He was laying in a hotel room, practically dying, close to a coma and we were out partying with U2. He kept saying ‘I don’t feel right’. And I kept thinking ‘For fuck sake, you moaner, get a fucking grip. Stop being a moany old cunt – we’re on tour with U2, it’s supposed to be fun. Get a life’. Little did I know was he was actually dying. I felt really bad. And then I lost my voice. We were headlining Roskilde, and thirty seconds in, nothing would come out of my mouth. It was awful. Absolutely awful.
How did you fix your vocal chords?
We were playing Russia later on and I saw a vocal specialist at the Bolshoi. I was really excited because I thought it would be really glamorous. And I got there and it was this grotty place with blood on the floor and a nurse sanitising her instruments over a naked flame. So I thought, ‘Fuck this, get me out of here.’ So in the end Gwen Stefani’s vocal specialist diagnosed a throat cyst.
Bloody hell, it’s a miracle you’re still together after ten years.
[Laughs] I can’t believe it. It’s scary. We haven’t celebrated yet, but we’re going to have a party this year. Even to have a record deal after all this time is amazing. Some bands don’t even get to put out a second record and we’ve done four now, although it’s harder, particularly for women in rock. There were hardly any to begin with and a very few have survived. It’s really frightening.
Where have all the women in rock gone? There has to be more to music than Joss Stone.
I don’t know. There are three girls that I really love: Brody Dalle, Peaches and Karen O. But that’s only three amazing people in the last ten years.
And there’s Courtney…
Yeah, but Courtney and me came out at the same time. We’re peers, but there’s been no-one else giving us a run for our money. It’s insane. Where are they? Technically speaking I shouldn’t be out here doing a fourth record, but there’s nobody else doing it, so fuck it. I’m going to carry on until these bitches drive me off the block.
Do you feel that you have become a role model for the current generation?
No, not a role model. Brody and the others are their own people and they’re bringing something different themselves, but I feel part of that lineage. That feels good to me. In order to break through like they have, you have to do your own thing. That’s a mistake a lot of girls make: they try to be like somebody else. It’s always the unique individuals who make it.
Do you still love rock’n’roll?
Oh yeah, touring’s the best bit. It’s the only bit that I live for. I hate making records, it doesn’t interest me. Don’t get me wrong, I love the end result, I love having records that I’ve made, but I just want to have fun… in the moment. And that’s what touring is to me. It’s the fucking best drug ever.
But you’re away from home, friends and family…
[Defiantly] I love it. It’s complete escapism. You don’t have to worry about bills, mortgages, money. You don’t have to worry about anything apart from getting your fat arse up on stage every night. And I love the tourbus. It’s really relaxed, you get in your bunk and you’ve got the really weird rhythms of the road. It’s really soothing. The only thing I don’t like are the toilets.
But there are rules for that sort of thing…
Oh yeah, very, very strict rules. Although recently I’ve hear confessions from band members and their p[partners about incidents that have gone unnoticed by my highly sensitised nose. There are all kinds of things going that I can’t see... but I can smell.
So you’re quite a drifter then?
I’ve never thought of myself that way, but considering I’ve been adrift since I was a kid I must be to a certain degree. It’s probably a commitment thing. I don’t like committing myself to one place for very long. I like feeling free, I like to think, ‘Ooh I’m going to London this week and I’m going to stay there until I have to go somewhere else’.
There must be times when you want to curl; up on the sofa at home with a cup of tea and Changing Rooms?
But if I’m at home I end up worrying about housework and cle4aning. You’ve got to think of other things… bills, tiles, leaking roofs. I don’t want to deal with all that stuff.
Sounds like much of Shirley Manson’s life is really quite normal.
I am normal. I’m the most normal person I know. I can go to the supermarket without hassle. I have the best of both worlds because my life isn’t severely impacted, but I get to do something really exciting. I feel like I get all the perks without the downsides. I was on a plane from LA yesterday and Robbie Williams was there. When I got off I was fine, but he had cameras thrust in his face. I couldn’t deal with that.
So when you’re in upper class on a transatlantic flight with someone like Robbie Williams, is there an unwritten code of celebrity etiquette?
It depends. Robbie was very lovely and sweet. Sometimes you’ll sit there and you’ll have a conversation – it depends on whether you like the other person’s music or their personality. If you don’t like somebody, you don’t bother them and hopefully they won’t bother you. Unless somebody’s a real prick you’ll probably acknowledge them because it’s polite.
So who’s been a real prick?
[With a wry smile] No one that springs to mind.
Liar.
[Laughs] No, certainly nobody that deserves to be called a prick in a national publication.
But you’ve never held back from mouthing off before. Notoriously, you once said that you wanted to punch J-Lo in the face…
I did, yeah. I met her afterwards and it was fascinating. We were doing a magazine shoot. I was talking to somebody and I could feel the molecules shifting behind me. I couldn’t see anything, but I knew something was happening and then I turned round and saw her coming straight towards me.
So what did you do? Did you start cracking your knuckle’s at this point?
Well, she was bringing some of the New York street to my door – Jenny from the Block kicking off. But she was very nice. She thrust her hand out and introduced herself and did not drop eye contact. I had to be the one who played submissive dog and I loved her for it.
She just locked her eyes on mine and I couldn’t handle it. I had to look away. I thought ‘That’s why she’s so successful’. I don’t regret saying that I wanted to punch her. I felt it was very true at the time – she was a pain in the arse – but she’s much more chilled out now.
Do you ever regret shooting your mouth off? I’m thinking about when you mentioned shitting in your boyfriend’s bowl of Cornflakes…
No, I don’t regret anything. [Laughs] Not at all. You can spend your whole life worrying about that sort of thing, but what are you going to do about it anyway? I said it, didn’t I? There’s nothing I can do about it. If somebody then punches me out because of something I’ve said, it’ll probably serve me right.
Your friend Gwen Stefani has turned her hand to acting (in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator). Is that something you’d fancy?
I have been asked and have representation (In Hollywood) but I haven’t been offered anything I like. I don’t want to do it for the sake of doing it.
What roles are you usually offered?
Just stuff that I’m not interested in doing. It’s either a drug addict, a rock star, a ball-busting chick with a gun. I find it stupid, they’re just silly…
…Tomb Raider types?
Yes, very much that kind of thing. Not that I wouldn’t want to do something like that if it was done really well, but that wasn’t the calibre of stuff I was being offered. I’ve got a really good career and I can be picky. But I’d still really like to do it. Gwen got really lucky with Scorsese… it doesn’t come much better than that. [Mock sneers] First role! Good for her, though.
Anything else you’d like to do?
I’d really like to go on a safari. I’m a massive animal fan. I love tigers, in fact I’m generally fascinated by anything cat-like. We went out once in South Africa and saw some of the animals, and it was just an amazing experience. The rhinoceroses look like dinosaurs and the giraffes freaked me out. Honestly! Seeing them in the wild, it’s the freakiest thing I have ever seen – you feel like you’re in Jurassic Park. It seems so weird, a zoo just doesn’t have the same effect on you. [Laughs]It’s not very rock’n’roll, I know. Ha, ha!

SHIRLEY MANSON: WHAT'S ON YOUR iPOD?
posted 01:20 GMT+0

Garbage collection: The rock chick talks GQ through her digital playlist click by click
“I’m attracted to all the fucked-up artists. They are my touchstones!” So says Shirley Manson, the face and voice of Garbage, the Edinburgh-Wisconsin band that have sold ten million albums since exploding onto the scene in 1995 with ‘Queer’ and ‘Only Happy When It Rains’ Now after a four year wait, Garbage have returned with their fourth album, Bleed Like Me.
Favourite Front Men
Manson owns one of the first generation of iPods. “I work with geeks so the minute it came on the market I had one”, she says. Although she splits her time between America and Edinburgh, an upstart London band is high on her playlist. “I love the Razorlight record Up All Night,” she says. “I think particularly in the UK men who front bands fell they have to be a little cocky as a defence mechanism.” Her guilty pleasure is New Jersey rock band My Chemical Romance, particularly the single ‘I’m Not Okay’. “I screamed when I first saw the lead singer [Gerard Way] on MTV – I thought he was so cute. He’s a sort of super-eager Billy Corgan mixed with Jack White. Which in my book is a dynamite combination.”
Fantastic Femmes
Given Manson’s own musical output, it’s unsurprising that both Debbie Harry and Chryssie Hynde figure heavily among her favourites. “They defined female roick for the past 20 years.” Her Blondie track of choice is ‘Hanging On The Telephone” and she recently sang with the band at an LA benefit. “You have no idea what an amazing feeling it is to sing with someone who you loved since you were a kid.” Manson also recently sang with Hynde. “’Stop Your Sobbing’ is so utterly heartless. She’s got as much snarl in her now as she first came out in the punk scene. I don’t see her mellowing anytime soon.” Manson also relishes the venom of the original punk queen Patti Smith. The favourite is ‘Revenge’ from Wave 1979. “It’s so wicked and sinister. How can you not love a song that starts ‘I feel upset. Let’s do some celebrating’?”
Undiscovered country
From punk we move to country. “I love Willie Nelson”, says Manson, who doesn’t feel that Nelson’s credibility has suffered from collaborations with Jessica Simpson and Norah Jones. “I don’t think Willie Nelson needs to give a fuck what anyone thinks.” Fellow Nashville outsider Gillian Welch is also on the iPod. “Gillian has a black heart”, laughs Manson. “She looks really mumsy, but when she plays, this unbelievably sexy force comes off her – it’s frightening.”
Computer love
Although Bleed Like Me strays into rockier territory, Manson still enjoys electronica, particularly Bjork. “When I heard her last album, Medulla, it reminded me of her early Sugarcubes stuff. Bjork has always managed to do her own thing and push the boundaries.” Equally progressive is scantily clad electro-hussy Peaches. “She’s just a provocative, sexy slut. I loved Fatherfucker, though I wasn’t sure about her beard on the front cover.”
Heavenly harmonies
Manson has a number of old-school girl groups on her iPod. She loves ‘Leader Of The Pack’ by The Shangri-Las and ‘Baby Love’ by The Supremes. Asked about her fantasy girl group, Manson doesn’t hesitate. “Gwen Stefani and Brody Dalle from The Distillers.” The line-up has already united for their debut gig. “We were on tour together and sang ‘Call Me’ by Blondie. That was hilarious.” Manson toured with Stefani during her No Doubt days, and has relished her transformation into a solo artist. “I loved ‘What You Waiting For? [from Love Angel Music Baby].” As for Dalle, Manson has ‘Hunger’ on her iPod, from The Distillers debut Coral Fang. “Brody Dalle is the Ava Gardner of rock’n’roll.”
Ladies in waiting
Until 2003, Manson wasn’t optimistic about the future of female rock. “For a long time, I was touring all over the world, headlining festivals where I was the only female on the bill.” So along with Peaches and The Distillers, Manson was delighted with the emergence of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. “Karen O is one of the greatest rock stars since Courtney Love.”
Miss understood
“I feel for all those female artists who are a little of the charts and are ridiculed in the press,” says Manson, as she reveals a particular love for Sinead O’Connor. “I’m so devastated that’s she’s become a figure of ridicule. It breaks my heart, because although she’s outspoken and provocative, she’s obviously not that tough.” Her favourite O’Connor album is I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, particularly the track ‘Black Boys On Mopeds.’ The treatment of New York singer Fiona Apple’s third album Extraordinary Machine, currently shelved by the record company, draws Manson’s disgust. “I don’t understand why record companies spend a fortune on mindless little fools who’ve been to stage school and don’t have anything of interest to say, then they leave Fiona languishing.”
Grunge match
Nirvana’s influence on any modern rock band is never far away, and Butch Vig, Garbage drummer and producer of Nevermind, secured a guest appearance by Dave Grohl on the new album. Manson also adores Courtney Love and picks Hole’s ‘Violet’, from Live Through This, as her essential track. “I didn’t like seeing Courtney falling to pieces. The way the media dealt with it sickened me. She’s made some great albums that will be remembered for generations to come. If any other female artist had come out with her last record [America’s Sweetheart] it would have topped every critic’s list.”

RETAIL IS READY
posted 01:45 GMT+0

With "Why Do You Love Me" championed by numerous modern rock stations and a second single (the title track) on the way, retailers have high hopes for "Bleed Like Me." Good news indeed, particularly after the lackluster sales of of "beautifulgarbage." According to Nielsen SoundScan, the 4 year old album has sold 384,000 copies-compared with 1.7 million and 2.3 million for "version 2.0" (1998) and "Garbage," respectivley. "There is a definite buzz surrounding this album," says David Shebiro, owner of specialty retail shop Rebel Rebel in New York. "People, especially the groups hardcore fans, are really anticipating its release."
He credits this to the album's guitar enhanced sound. "With other rock bands currently looking to electronic beats and studio technology for inspiration, Garbage appears to have done the opposite," Shebiro explains. It's like 'Been there, done that, let's make a rock record again.'"
From a lable viewpoint, anticipation for this album could not be better. Jock Elliot [R.I.P.], the product manager for this project, was optimistic. "You hope a band can sustain itself in its downtime-especially when not coming off a hit album. Ang Garbage does this."
"Garbage fans form an incredibly active community," Shebiro notes. "They want to know what the band is up to. People have been inquiring about this album for more than a year. And now they're talking about the band's recent live shows in Europe."
On March 19, Garbage-which is booked by Jenna Adler at Creative Artists Agency-embarked on a three-week promotional tour in Europe, which included shows in Paris and London.
After its European visit, Garbage commenced a brief North American tour April 8 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. It wraped May 10 at the Agora in Cleveland. Then, its back to Europe for the band, whose career is managed by Gayle Fine of Q Prime.
In addition to Garbage's own Web site, Geffen has partnerd with several other sites-including MSN, MTV, VH1, and AOL- for a variety of online initiatives. Radio Free Virgin has created a Garbage radio station that also plays in Virgin Megastores.
Offline, the label has hired Filter and Fly Life to assist with listening parties and lifestyle marketing, respecitvely.
Sophie Muller, who directed the video for "Why Do You Love Me," also shoot the video for "Bleed Like Me" April 12 in Los Angeles.
In addition to running in more than 3,000 movie theatres, the "Why Do You Love Me" video is playing on TV walls in such stores as Macy's Steve Madden and JC Penney.
The track is also included on the Victoria's Secret CD sampler "Pink." A gift with purchase, "Pink" is played in all Victoria's Secret Stores.
"After the past couple of years, to see it all come together like this feels good," Elliot says. "and the band is really behind everything that's going on."
Vig offers his own take: "Because we were on the verge of losing it all, we made the album of our career. We feel completely rejuvenated."

BUTCH'S & SHIRLEY'S PICKS

BUTCH VIG'S SONG PICKS
MOTO - "Dance Dance Dance Dance Dance to the Radio"
Two minutes and 17 seconds of pure punk bliss...with a reference to both Jonathan Richman's Roadrunner and Joy Division's Transmission, it never fails to shoot adrenaline straight to my heart.
JOSEPH ARTHUR - "Into the Sun"
A dark, yet achingly beautiful song about loss, regret, and somehow meaking peace with your past. At least that's what i think it's about.
RINGSIDE - "The Struggle"
A spare hypnotic beat and droning electric guitar groove along under the best white boy soul singing I've heard in a long time.
LOUIS XIV - "Finding Out True Love is Blind"
Obnoxiously infectious. Is the singer being cheeky or does he really think he's Casanova? Either way, this is the best sneer i've heard since Mark E. Smith.
CRIMEA - "Baby Boom"
Their songs really grew on me. There are some flourishes in the music that recall Flaming Lips. It's the first time I've heard the words "Tarzan, King of the Jungle" in a pop song.
TEGAN AND SARA - "Walking with a Ghost"
One of those simple pop songs I can't get out of my head. For the longest time I thought they were singing, "i was smoking with a ghost," which come to think of it, I prefer.
SHIRLEY MANSON'S ALBUM PICKS
THE ARCADE FIRE - Funeral
One of my absolute favorite new bands. They seem to march to their own drum--doing something completely unique and enchanting. I love this record so much.
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE - Lullabies to Paralyze
That Josh Homme is a stud and his band are a bunch of studs also. This new album is studlike. Simple as that.
A GIRL CALLED EDDY - A Girl Called Eddy
Here is a girl with a voice like Dusty Springfield who writes like Burt Bacharach. This record is a little jewel.
KASABIAN - Kasabian
They remind me of both the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses back when they were in their prime. The sound of this makes me want to go get high.
DEATH FROM ABOVE 1979 - You're a woman, I'm a machine
This is so fresh sounding. Watch them rise fast. They are impossible to resist.

GARBAGE'S 'BLEED LIKE ME' ENTERS NO 4 ON BILLBOARD ALBUM CHART; RANKING IS THE BAND'S HIGHEST CAREER (PRESS RELEASE)
posted 01:35, updated April 22nd 02:13 GMT+0

SANTA MONICA, CA. (Geffen Records) - "Bleed Like Me," the fourth album by the band Garbage, makes history today as it enters Billboard's Album Chart at No 4. The number is the band's highest ranking in the US in its illustrious career. It comes on the heels of the album's first single, "Why Do You Love Me," which rocketed to the top ten on the Modern Rock chart.
The album and band have been getting rave reviews in the press including a four star "Alternative Press" review: "A return to the steady Garbage ferocity of old; it's first rate."
In David Fricke's review in "Rolling Stone" he writes the album is a "high-speed bouquet of rusted-razor blade guitars." Adding that lead singer Shirley Manson "can smell her own blood on these tracks. You hear it in high vicious fidelity."
Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker, the foursome who are Garbage, recently shot the video for their next single, which is the album's title track. The award winning and provocative video director Sophie Mueller who directed the video for "Why Do You Love Me," was also at the helm for "Bleed Like Me."
Garbage has been touring North America over the past few weeks, playing sold out nightly shows. Again, the press has been over the top in its praise of the dates. The "Los Angeles Times" put it simply in closing their review of the band's show April 11 at the Wiltern Theater, "Garbage is back and better than ever."

The remaining North American dates are as follows
April 24 Montreal QC Metropolis
April 25 Toronto, ON Kool Haus
April 27 Detroit, MI State Theatre
April 28 Milwaukee, WI The Rave/Eagles Club

FANS COMMENT: GARBAGE.COM BACK ONLINE
posted 23:00 GMT+0

Every now and then, I would like to invite you to write a news, a review, your opinion, whatever what you'd like to share with the Garbage fan community about the band and their latest concert or news. You can submit your thoughts to the e-mail on the right column. Rob from the great site Garbage Discography gave me this idea, and honoured me with the first post under this concept:
April 20, 2005 and the new official site finally sees the light of day 51 days after it should have first graced our computer screens, so what’s new?
Well the site itself is very flash heavy with the navigation in particular. The news now has the advantage of the built in RSS feed which is great if you don’t want to check the site out on a daily basis. The virtual ticket is a nice area for non fan club members because it offers photographs and videos for everyone. Then we move on to the Discography which has a few releases.
The community section is aimed at the signed up members of the fan club. Here you can post messages on the official forum, have your own web blog, in the fan scraps section; chat, suggest a fan site of the month, and view other member’s profiles.
The other main area which is new for members is the Extras part. It currently has two areas, these being Multimedia and the Bands Journals which include the well loved studio diaries. The multimedia section has the bands videos and the same live material also featured in the Virtual Ticket area.

WHO DOES SHIRLEY MANSON THINK SHE IS?
posted April 19th 21:55, updated April 20th 01:07 GMT+0

Born in Scotland 38 years ago, this Garbage singer is known as “frog eyes” and loves to watch the NBA and use the “C” word.
Your self-portrait says "Le Mepris." What Does That Mean?
Le Mépris is a French movie by Jean-Luc Godard. I was watching it while I was drawing the picture. It means “contempt,” which is such a fantastic word. My dad’s always saying, “Why do you have to be so full of contempt for everything?”
And what's the Answer?
I think it’s being a redhead. Having red hair is like having a tattoo—it’s indelible. When you’re really small you have this feeling that you’re not the same as everybody else, and it carves out your personality.
One odd thing about your self-portrait?
Yes, doctor?
There are scars on your throat and above your heart.
I had vocal surgery just before making this record, which was a big ordeal. And I had a tumor cut in my breast, so I have this huge scar now, a real scar.
Is the new Garbage record also full of scars?
Every record is, for every artist. That’s what songs are.
What was your nickname in school?
Occasionally I was called “Frog Eyes” or “Bloodhound.” I have these huge, bulging eyes. The nicknames were really cruel, and I found them utterly devastating. I don’t know if I was ever well-adjusted, but I was an A student until I was about 14. Then I was bullied at school. When you’re bullied, it remains a motivating factor for the rest of your life.
Who was your worst boyfriend?
He gave me V.D. I was about 18 or 19, and he didn't tell me he'd given me V.D. Instead, he slipped a note from the health center, asking me to come in for a checkup, inside a alentine Day's card. Really charming. And I never saw the note. Eventually I discovered I had V.D. because the symptoms became so appalling.
I don't think Hallmart has a card for thoseoccasions. What's your favourite curse?
"Fucking cunt." American women seem horrified by my use of "cunt." When you use it in America, you have delivered a foul blow. Scots just think it's really funny.
What medication are you on?
I'm so chock-full of pills I literally couldn't even tell you how many I take. It's frightening. I have pills to fix everything.
Are they working?
You tell me.
Judging from the new record, not so much. What kind of drunk are you?
A happy drunk. I used to be quite a heavy drinker, because everyone from Scotland is. The weather's so bad that we spend a lot of time indoors. It doesn't take much to get me drunk anymore.
How would you characterize your taste in sex? Kinky? Vanilla? Lusty? Bored?
I'm all of the above.
What's your favourite legal drug?
The San Antonio Spurs. About four years ago I spotted Tim Duncan taking some free throws, and I became an insane basketball freak. I have NBA League Pass on my TiVo, and I spend revolving amounts of money on tickets. But I never want to meet Tim dunca; I just want to idolize him from afar.
Talk us through your worst haircut.
In 2001, I dyed it blonde but left one side of it longish. That was unatractive! I was in a deep depression, and it alleviated a lot of the stress, because I disappeared into being somebody else.
So, Shirley: Who do you think you are?
Doctor, surely you can tell me. That's why I've come to you in the first place.
Sorry, but our session is up.
I'll see you the same time next week, yeah?
May issue of Blender is on newsstands now!

LIVE DAILY REVIEW: GARBAGE, "BLEED LIKE ME"
posted 14:40 GMT+0

Once the champions of ultra-sexed-up, kissed-by-techno rock, Garbage spends much of their new album, "Bleed Like Me," plugging in their guitars and stomping on distortion pedals. Four years removed from the band's previous release, "Bleed Like Me" is an energetic, 11-track sprint that should thrill fans seeking a fourth platter of Garbage-brand power pop.
Ready-made for the arena stage, "Run Baby Run" is an anthem built around a super-sleek, howling refrain: "Life is too short/there's no time to waste it," croons Shirley Manson at the song's bridge. On the disc's title track, Garbage breeds deep, dark strings with cold, hard beats, while Manson--soulful and clear--offers melancholy tales of people in disrepair: "Therapy is Sweetie's brand new drug/Dancin' with a devil's past has never been too fun/It's better off than tryin' to take a bullet from a gun." On the rampaging "Why Do You Love Me," Manson evokes Blondie-via-Karen O, while the band pounds out a grinding refrain that channels Soundgarden.
Maybe it's because "Bleed Like Me" almost never got made, but there are moments when the band is at it's best. Desperation yields inspiration. "It's All Over But the Crying" is one of those great break-up songs: driving, brutal, incontrovertible. Like the best moments of "Bleed Like Me."

FOR THE LOVE OF GARBAGE
posted 16:55 GMT+0

Call it the eight-year itch.
After recording and touring together since 1995, the four members of Garbage nearly called it quits two years ago.
"We were on the verge of collapse," Garbage drummer and noted producer Butch Vig says.
He says that when the band began recording its fourth album in early 2003, the process quickly spiraled into a black hole. Months later, "we bottomed out, with me walking out of the studio," he adds. "Any kind of optimism ran out, and we took a long hiatus."
In hindsight, Vig believes the band should have taken more time off after its 16-month beautifulgarbage tour.
"We lost our personal lives," Vig notes. "We also lost any sense of a common ground. We were burned out on each other. So, each one of us looked in the mirror to see what we needed to do. And thoughts of losing the band made us realize that we loved it too much."
Fast-forward to March 2004. Vig and his bandmates —- Shirley Manson, Steve Marker and Duke Erikson —- returned to the studio. "We felt a desperation. So we played fast and furious —- as if our lives depended on it," Vig recalls.
And perhaps, in a way, they did.
The end result, released April 12 in the United States via Geffen (one day earlier internationally), is Garbage's fourth studio album, "Bleed Like Me." The album's lead single, "Why Do You Love Me," recently went top 10 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart.
Sophie Mueller directed the video for "Why Do You Love Me," and shot the video for second single "Bleed Like Me" April 12 in Los Angeles.
Written and produced by the band, the album eschews much of the electronic-leaning production of "beautifulgarbage" and "Version 2.0" for guitar-drenched rock. Infused with the fierce energy of the band's live shows, "Bleed Like Me" recalls Garbage's 10-year-old self-titled debut. (Dave Grohl guests on opening track "Bad Boyfriend.")
"We've almost gone backward with this album," Vig offers. "It's us getting back to a more primal sound—guitars, drums, bass and Shirley's voice."
But before deciding on this approach, Vig attempted to come up with something completely new and fresh for the project. "I was beating myself up trying to figure out a new sound for the album," he says. "And then I simply went back to getting great sounds from guitars."
In the process, the band recorded its most spontaneous album, Vig notes. "There is more first-take singing from Shirley. And there was a conscious decision to turn up room mics on drums so that everything was not perfectly balanced —- and not so electronic."
An avalanche of radio, media and fan interest in the band's new work has been welcome, particularly considering the lackluster performance of "beautifulgarbage." According to Nielsen SoundScan, the 4-year-old album has sold 384,000 copies -— compared with 1.7 million and 2.3 million for "Version 2.0" (1998) and "Garbage," respectively.
Having completed a three-week promotional tour of Europe, which included shows in Paris and London, Garbage is in the midst of a brief North American tour that will wrap May 10 in Cleveland. Another European run will follow.
Despite the band having barely spared itself from implosion, Vig is not worried that months of promotion and tour will again push the band to the edge. "Because we were on the verge of losing it all, we made the album of our career," he says. "We feel completely rejuvenated."

SHIRLEY MANSON VOTED #20 OUT OF 50 SEXIEST STARS
posted 00:45 GMT+0

UK Kerrang! magazine readers voted Shirley Manson as #20 sexiest star. The article and interview to Shirley about this subject reads:
«She hangs around with old men and she's still sexy.
FIERY, FIESTY, ever-so-slightly neurotic and never less than very gobby, Ms. Manson fulfills all the traditional Scottish redhead requirements and has long been the lady of choice for rock fans who fancy a bit of ginger. Ultimately, though, it's the Garbage singer's lustrous, fag-bothered voice that generally turns blokes to jelly, not to mention the fact that she is one of the few rock stars of either gender who we all wouldn't mind having a pint with.
SEXIEST MOMENT: Shirley's most recent Kerrang! photo shoot. Those boots, for fuck's sake!
YOU SAY: "One of the most beautiful women in the world," Ellie Humphreys, London
KERRANG! READERS HAVE VOTED YOU ONE OF THE SEXIEST PEOPLE IN ROCK: CAN WE HAVE YOUR REACTION PLEASE? "Today's meat....tomorrow's toilet juice."
HOW DO YOU DEFINE SEXINESS? "Definitely not toilet juice."
COULD ROCK N' ROLL EXIST WITHOUT SEX? "Oh yes, but you get a better bang for your buck when you get both."
WHO, IN YOUR OPINION, IS THE SEXIEST MALE/FEMALE IN ROCK HISTORY? "James Hetfield and Brody Dalle."»

'BLEED LIKE ME' ROLLING STONE REVIEW (3,5 / 5)
posted 01:15 GMT+0

Garbage have been making smart hard-pop records about desire and disaster, breaking up and starting over, for precisely a decade. It does not come easy for them. Bleed Like Me is only their fourth album in those ten years -- their first since 2001's Beautifulgarbage -- and making it was nearly the end of them. Early fractious sessions ground to a halt when drummer-guitarist Butch Vig -- a celebrity in his own right for his Nineties production work with Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins -- quit the group, effectively killing it.
He returned four months later and Garbage went back to work. This is the result: the first Garbage album that sounds as if Vig, guitarists-keysmen Duke Erikson and Steve Marker, and Scottish vocal fireball Shirley Manson truly know what they're writing, singing and raging about. "I've held back a wealth of shit/I think I'm gonna choke," Manson snaps in "Why Do You Love Me," a high-speed bouquet of rusted-razor-blade guitars. She can smell her own blood on these tracks. You hear it in high, vicious fidelity.
"Bad Boyfriend" opens the record like a honeyed chunk of Blondie wrapped in thick, serrated layers of Deep Purple: big guitars; even bigger drums courtesy of Dave Grohl, modern rock's own John Bonham; punchy-sax-section electronics that give you an idea of how Nirvana's Nevermind would have sounded if Vig had let loose his inner Phil Spector. Manson plays the predatory coquette with breathy relish ("I know some tricks I swear will give you the bends"). But she is under no illusions about the high price of guilt-free pleasure. Manson has surrendered to the inevitable betrayal around the corner before the song is even over: "If you can't love me, honey/Go on, just pretend." Three minutes into the album and the bad news is already in your face: When you want something in the worst way, that is surely how you will get it.
The first two-thirds of Bleed Like Me is easily the best sustained run of studio Garbage since the opening half of their 1995 debut. The density and detail of the charging guitars in "Bad Boyfriend," "Right Between the Eyes" and "Why Do You Love Me" make you wonder if, in another life, Vig, Marker and Erikson were all members of Blue Oyster Cult. They are certainly old enough in this life to know the original New Wave firsthand, so it comes as no surprise that in "Run Baby Run," Garbage do 1982 better and fresher than revival puppies like Kasabian and Bloc Party. Surrounded by a black forest of power-chord distortion, Manson pleads and prays like Deborah Harry atop a bouncing, throaty guitar riff that New Order would envy. Later, Manson shows off her deep affection for Patti Smith in the synth-pop frost of "Metal Heart," fronting the corrosion with a fight and aplomb that prove one doesn't have to sing through scabrous distortion -- take note, Marilyn Manson and Trent Reznor -- to mix pain and machines.
A sameness -- a feeling of roaring in circles -- creeps in toward the end of the record, as if the drama and drain of cracking up and coming together again left Garbage without enough strength, time or songs to maintain the high, shrill thrills upfront. But whatever the four of them went through to get this far, it was worth it just for the title track: a haunting spin on Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side," except this time everyone keeps falling over. Set in a grassy bed of acoustic guitar, dotted with Sgt. Pepper-esque splashes of Mellotron and mariachi-funeral brass, "Bleed Like Me" is a roll call of the sick, addicted and suicidal - Avalanche the anorexic; Chrissie, the boy who may be a girl -- sung by Manson in a cracked whisper that at times eerily sounds like Courtney Love (before she became a regular on Court TV). Manson spares no love or detail for the victims here -- and that ultimately includes herself. "You should see my scars," she sings with chilling sweetness in the bridge. You'll find it hard to look away.

Fans that attended either Paris show, the London one or both are now sure of one thing: Garbage ARE back: not only back to roots, but a better version of it. Fantastic in-your-face rock concerts, great attitude, the dedication to fans they used us to, everything has been amazing on these two first concerts: Paris for being the first one, Scala for the small and intimate place itself, this is what fans would problably want for the first shows: get a preview on the new album, and remember almost all the older hits.
Though only five songs were played from Bleed Like Me, the Sunday show in Cologne will have three new ones according to what Butch told Michel (a lucky fan by the way!!): Metal Heart, Happy Home and Run Baby Run.

GREAT 'BLEED LIKE ME' KERRANG REVIEW KKKK (out of 5)
posted 23:17 GMT+0

Bleed Like Me very nearly never existed. With inter-band relationships reaching boiling point during recording, drummer Butch Vig announced that he’d had enough. Thank god he had a change of heart, because this is the most exciting, touching, and most painfully human material they’ve put out in years.
The key, as ever, is Shirley Manson. Her strength has always been her honesty – despite her ice-cool demeanour and fearsome intellect, she’s always worn her insecurities on her sleeve, fore-grounding her fragility as much as her toughness. She’s never used her femininity as a marketing tool. Nor has she ever abandoned it to become one of the boys. She’s always just been her. That’s what makes her an icon. And never has that strength of character shone as brightly as it does here.
Most striking is the title-track – the most poignant, emphatic reflection of self-abuse and neuroses since Manic Street Preachers’ ‘4st 7lb’. Over a gorgeous cello-strewn background, Shirley liltingly introduces us to various outsiders – anorexics, the sexually confused, self-harmers – before ending on a euphoric ‘You should see my scars’. A teenage self-harmer, she’s not glamorising the problems here. Quite the opposite. These are battle scars, worn with pride, there to show that she survived and got though it.
Her insecurities rear their head during the queasy disco-rock of ‘Metal Heart’ (‘I wish I was half as good as you think I am’) and the dirty rock stomp of ‘Why Do You Love Me’ (‘I am not as pretty as girls in magazines, I am rotten to the core’). But her mouthy, opinionated side gets a welcome airing too. The soaring ‘Right Between The Eyes’ is an impassioned call to follow your own path, while ‘Sex Is Not The Enemy’ has Manson demanding the right to be open and unashamed about her sexuality.
Of course, it’s not all about Shirley. Musically, this is far noisier and grittier than 2001’s over-produced ‘Beautifulgarbage’. Dave Grohl’s appearance as drummer on blazing opener ‘Bad Boyfriend’ sets the album off in a manner so forceful it leaves no room to catch your breath, while the downbeat ‘Happy Home’ is the most breathtakingly emotive song they’ve written since breakthrough single ‘Only Happy When It Rains’.
‘Bleed Like Me’ may have had a difficult birth, but it’s clearly been worth the pain.
