HAPPY BIRTHDAY DUKE !

Doug was born on 15 January, 1951, and was raised in a small farming community in Nebraska- just like Butch (Sir Shag-a-Lot was not actually born christened "Duke." As a matter of fact, his original name was Douglas Erickson). Happy birthday! Visit the site Duke Erikson: Sir Shag-a-lot as an homage to this great man!

GARBAGE BACK TO GLOOMY SELF

Garbage star Shirley Manson has reverted to being a melancholic personality again - in a bid to rescue her band's sound.
The "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" singer believes the bands next effort - due for release later this year - will be more like their early, darker work, rather than the happy pop sound of the last album "Beautifulgarbage."
She says, "I think this one is going to be different. Beautifulgarbage was by far the lightest sounding, most unashamed pop album of our career. Because we were all going through such dark times in our lives at that point we deliberately strove to make some uplifting music to take our minds off of it.
"It gave us our most critically acclaimed album of our career, but the process to get there was a horrible one and I wouldn't want to repeat it. Hopefully we can now go back to embracing the doom and gloom we've always loved in our music."

DUKE "ROCK N ROLL EXPERIENCE" INTERVIEW

"Rock n Roll Experience" recently inteview Duk about the new album and other subjects. You can read the whole interview here. Here are some bits of the interview:
Rock N Roll Experience (Q): Will there be a Live CD or DVD from Garbage any time soon?
Duke: No, no time soon, we really wanted to do a compilation of our B-sides that have been released over the years as singles in Europe & we were talking pretty seriously about trying to do that before the end of the year but I don't know, I think we've kind of come to grips with the fact that we need to put out one more record before we start putting stuff like that out.
Q: Have you started demoing new material yet?
Duke: Yeah, I was just listening to some stuff just before you called actually that we had worked on back in Madison. We had some time off & we took about 6 days & just set up our instruments & started playing, just sitting around in a circle & improvising & I was just listening to the tapes from that & 2 or 3 things I am kind of excited about so it has begun.
Q: Can you describe the new songs?
Duke: There's a little bit of everything on it, there's one that's just this kind of repetitive groove thing that Shirley just started singing over, it's kind of changing things, what she is saying in the song is progressing, it's too early to say what the record is gonna sound like anyway, I could tell you one thing & it would change in 2 months
Q: Can you take me through the songwriting process for Garbage?
Duke: On the last few records...the last record was very different than the first 2 records, the first 2 records were wrote in a fractured process, somebody would come up with something & then record it, then somebody would put something on top of that, there's no one particular formula, Beautiful Garbage was a bit more of us just improvising, (...) but I think the way we've been working towards our fourth record I think is gonna be kind of a departure from how we worked in the past, or I hope it is anyways. I just think we're...we just sat stuff up in a room & we started playing & things started coming out of that & I think we're gonna try to be a bit more...work a bit faster this time, we're not gonna belabor things so much, try to keep things more simple & to the point
Q: Will Daniel be playing bass on the new record?
Duke: Most likely, it depends, I mean Daniels' got his own thing, I hope he does. He does play with other bands & he writes songs & he has a little studio at home...he's got things going on his own that have nothing to do with Garbage, so he may just decide to pursue that, but that is a long time away before he'll be required on the record, we're gonna try to write alot of songs first & that's gonna take a few months
Q: So will the next Garbage record be out in 2003?
Duke: Yeah, that's kind of what we'd like to happen, but we've said that every record so far, we've said that before every record

GARBAGE PLANS FOR 2003. 'ALBUM TITLE TBC'

In Shirley Manson's eyes, 2002 was Garbage's "black year", a year when legal hassles, record company bullshit and illness - specifically drummer Butch Vig's debilitating viral infection - took much of the joy out of a heavy promotional schedule for their 'beautifulgarbage' album. This month, the Madison, Wisconsin quartet will bid to put such troubles behind them as they begin work on album number four. After the pop-heavy tone of the last album, expect Manson and her studio egghead bandmates to rediscover the dark side of their art once more with their new material. And, with three esteemed knob-twiddlers in the band, finding a producer won't exactly present any problems.
Question: What does the new album sound like?
Shirley: "I think this one is going to be different. 'beautifulgarbage' was by far the lightest sounding, most unashamedly pop album of our career. Because we were all going through such dark times in our own lives at that point, I think we deliberately strove to make some uplifting music to take our minds off it. It gave us the most critically acclaimed album of our career, but the process to get there was a horrible one and I wouldn't want to repeat it. Hopefully now we can go back to embracing the doom and gloom we've always loved in our music!"
Q: Are you doing anything different this time around?
Shirley: "We're going to start by recording the album at a friend's studio, to break out of our normal studio environment. Butch lives in LA now, so he's not going to be at our studio all the time."
Butch: "We're gonna try to do this album faster, and write outside of the studio, have some ideas before we go in. With 'beautifulgarbage' we discovered we could trust our instincts more. This record will be interesting - we've gotten over our seven-year itch and that bodes well for all of us. However we reinvent ourselves, I think our fans will understand it."
Q: Butch, surely you must have made enough money from 'nevermind' to stop doing this.......
Butch: "The reason I keep making Garbage records is because it's more exciting than producing a nu-metal band."
Q: Any other plans for 2003?
Butch: "Besides making the album, we've talked about doing a collection of 'bummer' songs. Like a Leonard Cohen album that's super depressing. Some of my favourite songs are the quiet, depressing ones Shirley sings. And for the next record we want to make a five-minute movie for the enhanced section of e CD. I'd really love to make a film. Steve (Marker, guitarist) and I actually met at film school. We'd each have to make our own movies though, unhindered by the other three - we're so opinionated it's hard for us to agree on anything."

GARBAGE TO START WORKING ON NEW SONGS

Once the new year hits, it's back to the studio for the band, creating the follow-up to 2001's beautifulgarbage. We asked drummer and producer extrordinare Butch Vig if they had anything ready for when the time comes. "We spent a little bit of time right before we started the No Doubt tour and went in the studio and jammed, basically, and came up with bits and pieces of songs.
And, a lot of them are really promising, so we're gonna start to work on those over the holidays.
And, hopefully, around the end of January, go back in the studio and sorta take what we have and start sort of molding and sculpting them into proper songs." When asked if they would consider recording on a tropical Island like former tour mates No Doubt did for their 2002 release, Rock Steady, Butch and front woman Shirley Manson laughed, admitting there would be too many distractions.
Hopefully we'll see a new album by the end of 2003.

SHIRLEY ON KERRANG! YEARBOOK

SONIC YOUTH GET "DIRTY" AGAIN

A deluxe two-CD reissue of Sonic Youth's 1992 recording, Dirty, will be released on March 4th. The album will include eleven previously unreleased rehearsals and demos as well as a handful of b-sides.
Dirty marked a new phase for the band. After releasing their first six albums independently, Sonic Youth signed with Geffen and issued Goo in 1990. In the two years that followed, the group played a role in getting Nirvana signed to the label, and Dirty reflects some residual synergy from a joint tour between the two bands. Sonic Youth enlisted producer Butch Vig (who produced Nirvana's Nevermind) to record the album, which featured a (relatively) more mainstream sound for the experimental rock ensemble.
Dirty track listing: 100% / Swimsuit Issue / Theresa's Sound-World / Drunken Butterfly / Shoot / Wish Fulfillment / Sugar Kane / Orange Rolls, Angel's Spit / Youth Against Facism / Nic Fit / On the Strip / Chapel Hill / JC / Purr / Crème Brulee
Bonus material: Is It My Body / Personality Crisis / The End of the End of the Ugly / Tamra / Little Jammy Thing / Lite Damage / Dreamfinger / Barracuda / New White Kross / Guido / Stalker / Moonface / Poet in the Pit / Theoretical Chaos / Youth Against Fascism / Wish Fulfillment

BUTCH VIG ON THE PUMPKINS' "VIEUPHORIA"

The Smashing Pumpkins have released the DVD and CD of the 1994 VHS release "Vieuphoria". The 'pig' in the foreground of this release is none other than Butch Vig. The video and DVD also contains a Spinal Tap-esque 'interview' with him.
This was recorded on the 1994 "Siamese Dream" tour, album that Butch co-produced with The Smashing Pumpkins leader, Billy Corgan.

SHIRLEY'S WISHES TO 2003

"For the next year I'd like people to think more on the happiness they have than the one that doesn't belong to them. That people enjoy their life as it is, and as they wish. I truly wish no wars, that stupid political conflicts end and that the record industry gets better. To me, I ask many work and health".
