LYRICS

in a modern culture
my friend you must be careful
they've a million ways to kill you
in this dangerous world
there’s an art to growing old
taking chances
magic happens
one mistake's all it takes
and your life has come undone
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
it's a drag
i know it's hard
but you're tearing her apart
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
i am afraid that there's much to be afraid of
here today and gone tomorrow
don't end up in the gutter
just like the one before
you're just the same
such a loser
one mistake's all it takes
and your life has come undone
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
it's a drag
i know it's hard
but you're tearing her apart
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
you've got to let her go because you're breaking up the girl
the girl
one mistake's all it takes
and your life has come undone
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
it's a drag
i know it's hard
but you're tearing her apart
walk away cause you're breaking up the girl
you're breaking up the girl
you're breaking up the girl
the girl |

"The strumminess of the chords gave it a Big Star sort of feel.
Shirl heard us working on the chorus and the verse and came up
with melody and the lyrics." - Butch Vig, Kerrang!
"It's a cautionary tale." - Shirley Manson, Kerrang!
"The light, poppy, melodic feel to the song belies the
seriousness of the lyrics." - Duke Erikson, Kerrang! |

Glides along sultry, sad and dreamy, driven by a practically
recognisable acoustic guitar. - KERRANG!
In a world of sliding goalposts, where no-one can be sure of
anything anymore – who really won 'Pop Idol'? Will drukqz still
be illegal come summer? – at least Garbage have always been a
constant. Their buffed AOR grunge, topped off by Shirley
Manson's steely purrs, has long provided a safe port in pop's
ever-changing seas.
But who are this perky band, with their "doot doot doo"s and
chugging pop-rock? Where's the electronically-enhanced
dusk-rock? The goth-lite undertone? Gone, the way of all
certainties. 'Breaking Up The Girl' sounds like Blondie after
Deborah Harry learned to sing 'properly' (ie boringly). If
Garbage were sleek before, now they are positively non-stick:
politely plodding through the characterless guitar pop that will
have been described as "sunny" at whichever meeting we missed. -
